With tongue placed firmly in cheek....
- I believe that the earth is old. More than six thousand years old. Billions of years old.
- I believe that there is an orderly process of change by means of which some species remain the same for billions of years, others become extinct, and still others become something that their ancestors were not.
- I believe that studying animals can be useful in the study of people, because they follow the same physical and biological properties.
- I believe that everything I think will be amplified, modified, extended, contradicted, or changed by the things that people learn in days to come.
- I believe that when the day comes that my most cherished ideas are proved wrong that I will try to surrender my old understanding in favor of the new, even if it frightens me.
- I believe that the secularity of American public life is the best protection of American religious life. And that when any church tries to lay its hands on the power of the state it loses any claim it has to holiness, because coerced faith is meaningless.
- And I believe that people are worth something. Because of what they do, not because of what God has done to them.
Guess they'd better sharpen up the pitchforks and start warming up the brimstone.
